Vote for Syed Kerry

Hey, American Muslims, vote for a Syed.

“New research by Burke’s Peerage reveals that Mr. Kerry is the only presidential candidate in U.S. history who has genealogical descent from Muslims, Jews and Christians.”

Mr. Kerry is kinsman of the Shi’ite shahs of Persia (the most famous was Shah Abbas I, who reigned from 1587 to 1629), as well as the Muslim kings of Tunisia, all of whom —- Democratic presidential nominee included —- descend from the prophet Muhammad.

  1. I had heard that LGF posted something about this and that everybody was frothing at the mouth over there.

I found a page once that shows that lots of members of European royalty are descended from the Prophet (sAas) because of some dynastic marriage or other. Unfortunately, that site appears to be down at the current time, so I can’t link to it.

  2. میں نے سمجھا یہ اردو کا ایک بلاگ تھا؟ کم از کم ایک دو جملے اردو میں لکھ دیں۔

  3. Many in USA should be decendants of Arabs because Arabs were traders and sea farers. Some of them settled in America, Africa and even in far east.
Further, Muslim history reveals that scholars travelled to all parts of the world for teaching and preaching, settled and died their. You can find their traces even in countries like China and Russia. America was an open country, so, why not there ? There are a few Christian Americans who have their family name which is an Arabic word.

But, I wonder at linking him with Iran keeping in view present controversy between USA and Iran on N development. Has this artical been published to get vote of Muslims or to hit Kerry from behind ?

  4. Family lineage has no significance in Islam. Ideally it puts no additional wieght towards his balance.

  5. Al-Muhajabah: That would be the standard reason of LGF and its fans.

D: I post in Urdu ocassionally. You can access my Urdu archives here.

میں اردو میں کبھی کبھی لکھتا ہوں۔ انگریزی میں لکھنے کی عادت ہو گئی ہے۔ میرے زیادہ تر قارئین بہی صرف انگریزی ہی سمجھتے ہیں۔ آپ کے کہنے پر اب اس پوسٹ کا اردو ترجمہ حاظر ہے۔

Dad: This article hasn’t gotten much play in the US. It was from Burke’s Peerage who release data about US presidents’ relationship to British (and European) nobility.

Asif: It was a fun post. I definitely don’t think anyone should vote for Kerry because of his lineage or lack thereof.

  6. it is pretty amusing, isnt it? its completely meaningless, but it’s also pretty cool in its own way.

  7. It is wrong that you have translated Persia to Fars. Persia is a Greek word corresponding the land of Iran, from Syrdar’ya to Tigris, but Fars is a region in the central and south of Iranian plateau. Other regions are Khurasan, Azerbaidzhan, Kurdistan, Luristan, Sistan and … . In fact Safavids were from Azerbaidzhan, and not Fars.

  8. as others have noted, most europeans are probably descended from muhammed. kerry just has a well investigated lineage.

  9. Kianoush the etymology of Persia is a corruption of Pars, the original Persian word for the region. Fars (under Arabicisation P becomes F) and Persia are virtually interchangeable, much in the same way Holland (the major province) and Netherlands (the nation) are.

Since I’m illiterate in the Nastaliq Urdu script I don’t know the exact translation for Persia, I should find out at my next Urdu class.

  10. Aziz: Definitely. It sounds counterintuitive at first, but it’s probably true for a lot of people who lived 1400 years ago.

Kianoush: It crossed my mind but Fars seemed like the best translation in Urdu. I’ll double-check what they called the Persians in Urdu. What do you guys called the Safavid empire?

  11. Zachary: You are right about Fars, but not Persia. Since in the time of Herodotus, Pars (people form Pars) were ruling over Iran, he referred to Iran as Persia.
Iran is consisted of two part: Ir + an:
“an” means “there”, and “Ir” stands for Aryans; therefore Iran stands for the land that Aryans are settled there. Another Persian suffix is “istan” which is consist of “ist”+”an”, and “ist” means “to stay, to settle”. So suffix “istan” means the settling place or literarily “land” (e.g. Uzbakistan= Uzbakland, Afghanistan=Afghanland and…).
Since European for centuries were relying on Herodotus’s history, they had referred to Iran as Persia. Persia has been the official internationally known name of Iran till 1935, but for Iranians it has been “Iran” from the beginning.

    Zack: Safavids are:
    صفویه
