Haj Mubarak to the hajjis and a happy Eid to everyone.

I have no clue why the Eid in Atlanta is on Thursday while most of the rest of the US is celebrating it on Friday. I think the mosques here follow Saudi Arabia and this year the Saudis first announced the start of the new month on January 12 (Eid-ul-Azha is on the 10th of the last month of the lunar Islamic calendar) and 3 days later changed it to January 11.

Eid is today in Seattle too, following the change in the Saudi announcement. Oh, well.

Eid mubarak!

Eid Mubarak.
Is the Saudi change the old two-khutbas-in-one-day-kills-a-sultan thing?

sepoy: That’s what the rumors always say, but I don’t think that would be the case since Eid has fallen on Fridays a number of times.

Zack: Eid wishes to your family.
In most places in India, Eid was celebrated on Friday. Also, this time I noticed increasing media interest. There was more than token coverage of the occassion on many local channels, something which I never saw in the past.

Eid Mubarak!
Your blog has made many impressions on my mind…

renee: Good one.

Faraz: Interesting. I was told by a couple fo South Indian friends that they celebrate Eid with their Muslim friends in India (in the sense that they are invited for Eid dinner etc. and invite the Muslims over for Hindu festivals.)

BridalBeer: Thanks. Your blog is very addictive.

The condition is sighting of new cresent, that is why sometime, when astronomically cresent has appeared but is not visible due to short time or being too fine, it is said to have been sighted the next day for the purposes of Islamic month.

Following any community or country is not religiously correct.

Dad: I think nowadays we can produce a good calendar for the next decade at least using astronomical calculations. At the very least, the statements of witnesses who claim to have seen the new moon must be checked with the astronomical data to establish whether it was possible or not.
