حج اور عید مبارک
تمام حاجیوں کو حج مبارک ہو۔ اور سب قارئین کو عید مبارک۔
مجھے نہیں معلوم کہ عید جمعرات کو کیوں ہے۔ ادھر اٹلانٹا میں مساجد سعودی عرب کی تقلید کرتی ہیں اور اس دفعہ سعودیوں نے تین دن بعد تاریخ تبدیل کی ہے۔
Haj Mubarak to the hajjis and a happy Eid to everyone.
I have no clue why the Eid in Atlanta is on Thursday while most of the rest of the US is celebrating it on Friday. I think the mosques here follow Saudi Arabia and this year the Saudis first announced the start of the new month on January 12 (Eid-ul-Azha is on the 10th of the last month of the lunar Islamic calendar) and 3 days later changed it to January 11.

In most places in India, Eid was celebrated on Friday. Also, this time I noticed increasing media interest. There was more than token coverage of the occassion on many local channels, something which I never saw in the past.

Faraz: Interesting. I was told by a couple fo South Indian friends that they celebrate Eid with their Muslim friends in India (in the sense that they are invited for Eid dinner etc. and invite the Muslims over for Hindu festivals.)

نہیں زکریا یہ اختلاف چاند پر تھا نہیں، بنایا گیا ہے۔ 2 ذی الحج تک یہی تھا کہ حج جمعرات کو ہوگا اور عید جمعہ کو۔ حتی کہ ہماری مسجد کے امام صاحب نے سعودیہ کو مدنظر رکھتے ہوئے اعلان بھی کردیا تھا پھر پتہ نہیں کیسے سعودیوں نے گزشتہ دنوں کی شہادتوں کا کہہ کر مہینہ شروع ہونے کے 3 دن بعد سب کچھ بدل دیا۔ یہاں عجیب مسئلہ کھڑا ہوگیا۔ پاکستان سے ہم 6 طلباء ہیں، ہم میں بھی اختلاف ہوگیا۔ بہت تکلیف دہ امر تھا۔
آصف: میں آپ سے متفق ہوں مگر مجھے خیال پڑتا ہے کہ ایسا بھی پہلی دفعہ نہیں ہوا۔
The condition is sighting of new cresent, that is why sometime, when astronomically cresent has appeared but is not visible due to short time or being too fine, it is said to have been sighted the next day for the purposes of Islamic month.
Following any community or country is not religiously correct.
Dad: I think nowadays we can produce a good calendar for the next decade at least using astronomical calculations. At the very least, the statements of witnesses who claim to have seen the new moon must be checked with the astronomical data to establish whether it was possible or not.
