No Recognition of Israel

See my previous post for background on this issue.

It seems like General Musharraf is backpedalling on recognizing Israel.

President Pervez Musharraf on Wednesday categorically stated that recognition of Israel by Pakistan is neither on the cards nor is such an eventuality likely to take place in the near future.

He said this could only be possible after developing a national consensus, adding that what he said was that in the light of possible rapprochement between Israel and Palestine, “we would review ground realities and then decide to take any further action”. The president said the US-backed ‘roadmap’ was in the process of implementation. “We are monitoring all developments, taking place in that region,” he added.

So, Pakistan won’t take the lead on this issue but will wait for the peace process to progress further.

Like every dictator, Musharaf wants to tell the world that his nation is important to him (in no way) by saying that recognition of Israel can not happen without general consensus. What this means to an average Pakistani like me is the waste of hundreds of thousands rupees in such a futile effort. Why don’t dictators decide things so freely, at least we could see their faces clearly.

Ejaz: Thanks for your comment. This national consensus bug is something new to Musharraf. I don’t remember Gen. Zia saying stuff like that. I do think it is bogus though.
