It was cold, but it was fun running with my 9 year old. We finished the race in 42:35.79.
They have a race at the start of the season where you run a 5K through the lights instead of driving. We ran the Lanier Under the Lights 5K on November 9. The race started about 10-15 minutes after sunset.
Here’s my data for the 5K:
I ran it with my 9 year old daughter. My time thus was 37:36.
The lights were a lot of fun to watch while running. I think in the future instead of driving the lights show, we’ll run this race.
My body fat percentage is now down to 14%. It’s the lowest I have ever measured.
About 9 years ago, almost 25% of my weight was fat. That got me worried and I had exercised my way to 20.5% fat by New Year 2005, losing 11 lbs (5 kg) in the process.
In another year (Jan 2006), my weight was down a further 10 lbs (4.5 kg) to 158 lb (71.7 kg). My body fat was also down to 17%.
17% was still on the higher end of normal, but it stayed that way for years.
Then last year, I got excited about running and cycling. That is now paying off. I haven’t lost any weight. I am 159 lbs (72 kg) right now but my body fat is down to 14%, lower than my New Year 2005 resolution target of 15%.
I wonder if I can reduce the body fat percentage further to 12%.
Oh and my BMI (body mass index) is 21.3 kg/m2.
On April 20, the weather was cool (39F/4C) and we all headed out to take part in the Run the River race nest to the Chattahoochee river in Roswell, GA.
Michelle and Amber ran in the 5K which started at 7:30. Michelle finished the race in 39:29 which was a new record for her, beating her Jingle Jog time by 11 seconds. Amber’s time was 42:32.
Then it was time for the 10K. It was a fairly flat course with just a bit of a hill at the midway mark where we turned around.

I paced myself much better this time than for the Silver Comet 10K. My mile splits were 9:42, 10:09, 10:27, 10:56 (the hill), 10:40, 10:34 and 9:29 (per mile for the last 0.22 mile). In fact, I should have gone a bit faster since I felt pretty good at the end.
I finished in 1:05:13. I placed 415/537 overall, 230/248 among men and 37/37 among men aged 40-44. Yes, I placed absolute last in my division!
This Saturday, I ran the Silver Comet 10K which bills itself as once of the fastest 10K races in the area since not only is it flat, but part of the course is slightly downhill. That made it the perfect first 10K for me.

I finished the race in 1:05:01 (chip time). My gun time was 1:05:30, according to which I was placed 474/675 overall, 285/330 among men, and 58/67 among men aged 40-44.
When chocolate’s on offer, of course, I’ll run. And that’s how I registered for the Hot Chocolate 5K.
On the morning of January 13, the “Hot” referred to the weather since it was 60F early in the morning.
It was slow going to get to the race area due to traffic. About 18,000 people were taking part and traffic was completely stopped for miles.
After the race, we got some chocolate fondue with a banana and other dips. It was yummy.

This was my first race with a timing snafu. Initially, the results online showed my chip time as 36 minutes. I knew that was definitely wrong. My Wahoo Fitness iPhone app had clocked me at 32:59 and I had started that before my corral even started running and had stopped it a little after crossing the finish line. So I sent them a correction request. My time has now been changed to 33:33, which is still about a minute too long. But I am going to let that stand.
Based on the new time of 33min 33sec, I was ranked 2169th/9083 overall, 756th/1732 among men, and 95th/269 among men aged 40-44. (Yes, men were only 19% of the 5K participants.)
Now, I am waiting for my first 10K!
Last weekend, I ran the Jingle Jog 5K. This was an exciting event because Amber, Michelle and I were all participating.
I ran this 5km race at Michelle’s pace, who did very well.

According to the official results, my chip time was 39:40 and gun time was 43:44. I finished 1,440th out 2,133 participants, 576th out of 758 men and 70th out of 92 among men aged 40-44.
More importantly, Michelle finished in 39:40 which was faster than she had been running with me before the race. She was 1,438th among all (2,133) participants, 867th among 1,375 women/girls and 50th among 81 girls aged 0-9.
It seems like more women run than men. There were a few more women than men in the Gobble Jog and in the Jingle Jog, women outnumbered men almost 2:1.
In June, I started using the 9-week couch-to-5K program with the Get Running iPhone app. Since it was summer in HOTlanta, I did all my running/walking on a treadmill at the gym. But I stuck with it and by the end of August, I was able to run 3 miles without any walking breaks, even though I was slow.
Then the question arose: What’s next? The truth is running on a treadmill is incredibly boring and with the couch-to-5K program finished, I didn’t have any goals. I figured the best option would be to train for a 10K race in spring of 2013.
A friend was nice enough to make a training plan for me and help me choose races. I decided to do a few 5K races first. Also, it was time, with fall approaching, to start running outdoors.
At first, running outdoors was much harder than on a treadmill. You have to pace yourself instead of the machine doing it for you. And in my area of northern Atlanta suburbs, there are a lot of rolling hills.

I found running in a race to be a lot more exhilarating than running by myself. It was a lot of fun to pass other runners. That’s how I ended up with my fastest 5K time ever.
According to official Gobble Jog results, my chip time for the 5K race was 31:46.01 and the gun time was 32:33.80. I placed 576/1027 among men and 54/101 in my division (men 40-44) [Of course the ranking is based on gun time.]
I don’t know what the cool kids do about keeping a record of their race times, but I have started a spreadsheet with my race results.
I have another 5K race coming in a week!
