Mexican Immigration Threat

Samuel Huntington has written an article about the threat of Mexican immigration to the US. His article is full of assumptions, half-truths and ignoring data that doesn’t fit his thesis. In some ways, it is worse than his Clash of Civilizations idea some years ago.

I can’t be bothered by this so-called “threat.” As someone who was not born in the US, I have no problems with immigrants arriving in the US. As a global nomad who has not yet decided where to settle, I don’t have much sympathy for nationalists and patriots. Nativist feeling only gets my contempt. As for language, I am not a good learner of language and have been found bitching a few times about Spanish-only signs in some areas, but then English is not my first langauge and the world will not fall apart if most people spoke Spanish in the US. Like I learned English as a kid, my children could learn Spanish.

The best critique of Huntington I have seen is by a multipart one by Scott Martens on his blog Pedantry. Daniel Drezner has some good points as well.

Buscaraons relates bilinguilism, colonialism, Mexican immigration and insecurity.

Russell Arben Fox and Haroon Mughal are somewhat sympathetic to Huntington probably because of their conception of language and culture.

  1. That is what makes a difference between you and a Hispanic immigrant who is reluctant to assimilate him/herself to the mainstream US culture; you have no difficulties in getting used to the culture, and you will become an American
    …instead of America(ns) become Pakistan(i)!

  2. That is what makes a difference between you and a Hispanic immigrant who is reluctant to assimilate him/herself to the mainstream US culture; you have no difficulties in getting used to the culture, and you will become an American

Being an India-born American, I too have “assimilated” in the mainstream US culture, of which Spanish and Hispanics are a vibrant and dynamic part. Granted that, coming from cosmopolitan, urban India, where it’s normal to have neighbors speaking different languages than yours, I may be more receptive to a multilingual culture than most. However, it seems to me that those who complain about immigrants not assimilating may themselves be the ones failing to assimilate into their culture, which is constantly undergoing evolution.

Sure, expect our immigrants to learn our language but why miss out on learning theirs at the same time? America can only gain from a polyglot citizenry.

  3. Mike: Why do you assume that a Hispanic will not assimilate while I’ll? Most evidence over multiple generations says otherwise. Plus why is even good to completely assimilate forgetting every Pakistani trait of mine?

aslam: Agreed. While languages have caused some trouble in multilingual societies, I am not sure why everyone assumes bilingualism to be so bad in the US? It does work in a lot of countries and is quite normal.

    Ikram: You are welcome.

  4. Zack: I didn’t mention to forget EVERY Pakistani trait of yours; but probably it is better to forget some previous habits, specially generals!

Aslam: I didn’t say not to learn their languages. However for an immigrant the minimum of assimilating to the US mainstream culture is learning English, not making the others to learn his language.
I can guess that in your urban Indian neighborhood you were communicating with your neighbors in English, not their languages!

  5. correction: in the previous comment I meant by “genrals” in fact “the Generals”.

  6. Mike: Yes, it’s good to have fresh immigrants learn English if they don’t know it. My point however is that the “mainstream” could stand to lose the pervasive resistance, if not antagonism, to other languages.

“Making others learn their languages” is a telling choice of words. It indicates to me an underlying ego or control issue which is separate from the practical aspect of all of us speaking English.

And, English wasn’t the only language that I shared in common with my neighbors in India. We were taught 3 languages before graduating from high school, none of which in my case was the language I spoke at home. See what I mean?

  7. Mike: While it is definitely good to get rid of the fondness for military rule whehter one immigrates or not, I am not sure it affects things much in the US. That fondness, even if it exists, is generally for Pakistan and not transferable to the US in any immigrants. Plus, it dies with the first-generation immigrant.

I don’t think there are any more bad traits in immigrants compared to natives.

Also, immigrants have never made nayone learn their language. Most immigrants try hard to learn English because it helps them a lot in their life in the US. Some are handicapped in this because of age or education or poverty.

I would guess Hindi as the lingua franca for Aslam, though he can correct me if I am wrong.

Aslam: How can you be Karachiwala and still be India-born? That’s plain wrong, man.

  8. Yes, Hindi was the other bridge, As for my last name and being India-born, I was told pretty much the same thing by a security person at the Mumbai airport many years ago. 🙂

  9. Aslam: How can you be Karachiwala and still be India-born? That’s plain wrong, man.

Hey, I’ve got tons of Karachiwala relatives who are India-born. Most are real old, but some aren’t. People kept trickling over the border into the late 60s.

I could ask how one could possible be a Karachiwala if one is not India-born, or immediately desceded from the india-born. But that gets into some tricky issues. (And I’ve already put up too many brown vs brown ethnic comments in at GNXP lately.)

  10. How can you be Karachiwala and still be India-born? That’s plain wrong, man.

Just about the only people who consider themselves ‘karachiwalas’ are from India – they migrated here sometime between 1930s-1960s. The rest all hail from some archaic tribe somewhere or the other. There isn’t much of a melting pot in Karachi… everyone is a a dozen other identities before they are Karachites.

  11. After taking a look at some of the immigration figures, I think it likely that the hispanics will assimilate in much the same way as the Irish, Poles and Italians before them. The hispanic tide will flow and ebb. Many will learn English for financial and social reasons; immigrants and their children will marry members of the majority. Their culture will influence America somewhat, and America’s culture will significantly influence them. In the end, little hispanic towns will mark their coming in a number of large cities in the US. America will add black beans, yellow rice and cuban sandwiches to older ethnically inspired staples such as potatoes, pasties and spaghetti.

    All is well.

  12. Thanks, guys on the replies to the Karachiwala question. It was only rhetorical.

Captain Arrrgh: I think there might be some differences between the immigrants a century ago and now. The world has changed much after all. But I agree that assimilation/intregation will occur normally despite the alarmist tone of Huntington and others.

  13. When Irish, Poles, Chinese and etc came to the US, there was no way back to home. Atlantic and Pacific oceans were isolating the new land from the old world. They came over here while they knew they would stay here for a long time. These guys have been highly motivated and all had one thing in common: starting a new life in the new world. Yes, new world with its all new characteristics, new climate, new neighbors, new culture, and new language. They had already taken this chance to risk all their properties on this one way journey. They wanted to build something new in their life. And this has been the spirit of the immigration to the US through the history.
However a great portion of Hispanic immigration is not because of the motivation for building a new life; they come to the US, because they are starving at home. A great portion of them are not looking for making a better life, they only want to survive. If the US was connected to any other poor regions by land (e.g. if it was connected to Africa), you would see floods of uneducated, unskillful immigrant from those regions. A great portion of the Hispanic immigration can be categorized as immigration from the “South” to the “North”, which has been seen around the world; in Europe for example, starving Africans immigrate to the wealthy European countries and what they bring is not necessarily contributing the culture of the hosting country.
There is no doubt that the Hispanic culture is dynamic and contributing; but are the majority of those immigrants the true conveyers of this culture? or they carry the culture of low levels of their society? Can (majority of) these guys really contribute anything to the US (of course except the cheap labor force)?

  14. Well, Mike, you have provided the perfect illustration of what Richard Rodriguez said (I don’t have the article so this is approximate): America likes to romaticize about being a nation of immigrants but the source of its immigrant pride is always its past. The truth is that Americans have never liked the immigration happening in their time.

This is what he said in a 1996 speech:
Maybe we don’t have an “immigrant problem” but a native-born problem. We native-born Americans complain about welfare mamas who don’t want to work. But, in truth, we are terrified by the “working poor” who are taking jobs all over our cities, out-working us, undercharging for their labor. All over the world — from Tijuana to Singapore — the poor are working, assembling our televisions and our jogging shoes. It is their industriousness that troubles us.

  15. Mike: You are confusing a lot of things.

You are saying that previous immigrants were poor as well annd came to make a new life in teh US but Hispanics are somehow different. How?

If Hispanics are different because of their poverty, I think you are wrong. I’ll have to look up the data but my impression is that previous immigrants haven’t exactly come from the cream of their societies.

Also, not all immigrants came to settle here permanently. About half of all Italians returned to Italy after a while. Lots of Germans went back as well.

Most immigrants, past and present, tried to preserve their cultures somehow. This generally does not work unless the majority community cuts them off because peopel from different ethnicities intermarry and their next generations are much more assimilated.

If you are talking about the shortening of distances with modern technology, that affects everyone, not just Hispanic immigrants. It is as easy to fly from the US to the Middle East as it is to fly to Brazil. You can watch Al-Jazeera or Pakistan TV or Univision.

I also sense a hostility towards the poor and the underclass of society. Is “culture” owned by rich Mexicans or Africans only? Do the poor not contribute to society by doing all those menial jobs we take for granted?

  16. When Irish, Poles, Chinese and etc came to the US, there was no way back to home.
This is a very important point. They burned their bridges, so to speak, while today’s immigrants don’t have/need too. (mostly).

There was no telephone or internet back then, so communites did huddle together to retain some sort of common identity – not just to retain their former nationalies/culture but to form a sort of support group also.

however a great portion of Hispanic immigration is not because of the motivation for building a new life; they come to the US, because they are starving at home.
The Irish were also starving. So were the Chinese.. Need is a great motivator. It’s ridiculous to state that Hispanics are only looking to make enuogh for a mcdonalds meal a day and they’ll all just be happy with that. Immigration is not done at the drop of a hat. Don’t u think people willing to change their entire lives by immigrating probably have it in them to work and contribute to society – I would say more so than many already in the US.

  17. At the moment, comparing to other immigrants, Hispanics are the poorer. While better immigrants can come to the US, the immigration policies are going to be taken hostage by uneducated immigrants who are mainly Hispanics. I meant by the better immigrants the ones who care where they want to live. Those who have more reason to live in the US than only escaping from starvation ( at the present time).
Also I am surprised about your fancy idea about traveling to the US by air. For example landing at Miami International airport to go and pick strawberry in Florida!
Zack: you are playing with words! There is no hostility towards the poor and the underclass of society ; I am not talking about the US or western Europe. I am talking about poor countries where being poor means child labor, less education, and definitely having a lower culture.

  18. Mike: I guess we will have to agree to disagree.

your fancy idea about traveling to the US by air.

I wasn’t saying that the poorest of the poor travel by air regularly between the US and their home countries. I just meant that air travel and other modern communications mean that there is no clean with the home country nowadays for most immigrants.

  19. Mike: I knew when I saw the interview on NYT that I would hear from you. Huntington’s answers are quite unimpressive I must say.

Plus don’t you disagree with him? I thought your issue was with unskilled immigration, while his is with language and “culture.”

  20. at the first glance, you are right about the difference, but there are few points that I will mention later.

  21. 😉 I’m a Mexican immigrant myself and I must say I find all these comments interesting! I came here when I was 6 and now I’m 19. I’m pretty much assimilated so I never can understand when people say hispanics dont assimilate. Geez I’m not Mexican enough for Mexicans and American enough for Americans! :p

  22. The fact is that most Mexican immigrants are poor, unskilled and have high birth rates. As such, the economic costs far outweigh the benefits. It’s true these Mexican immigrants work hard to next to nothing and this benefits certain employers in the low wage sector. However, lower working class Americans and working poor Americans have been pushed out of jobs such as factory, domestic or janitorial work by Mexicans who work for even lower wages. The importation of such large numbers of poor people into this country is a huge strain and it is the American taxpayer that ends up paying for overcrowded public schools, bilingual education, emergency room visits and hospitalization for the poor and uninsured, food stamps and other social services. Along with an increase in poverty comes and increase in crime, gangs and other negative social effects. Again, more tax money must be spent on incarceration. Here in the USA, there are millions of Americans who are unemployed, have economic problems or who lack medical insurance. We simply can’t afford to take on the problems of Mexico. Mexico has lots of natural resources such as oil, land, minerals, oceans etc. It could be a prosperous country if it was run correctly and a prosperous Mexico would be of great benefit to Mexicans and Americans. Mexicans could make decent money in their homeland, not have to leave their families behind and take risks trying to enter the USA. Americans would save billions in tax dollars that could be used to help America’s problems. I have nothing against legal immigration in moderation on an as needed basis of Mexicans or others, but today’s immigration is not necessary, is harmful to both Mexico and the USA, and it totally out of control. It’s high time the USA shut down the border by cutting off all unskilled jobs and benefits. The US government then needs to work on the economic and healthcare problems of Americans. The Mexican government would then be forced to finally take care of the problems of its’ own people in its’ own country.

  23. This country has always had very strict immigration policy. People have never just been able to come here on a whim. In the 1800’s and early 1900’s, there were strict quotas put on various nations and very strict policies on the health of potential immigrants. As the poster above said, I have nothing against immigration in moderation but you have to use common sense. Today’s immigration from Mexico and other countries is totally out of control and must be drastically reduced.

  24. I read somewhere that the estimated cost of immigrants, mostly from poor countries, has costed the American taxpayers 900 BILLION dollars over the last 6 years. We have many Americans who lack medical insuarance in a nation where healthcare and prescription drug costs are spiraling upwards. Think how many Americans who lack medical insurance could have been helped by these billions. It’s time the USA put its’ own people first for a change. We need to stop most immigration and take care of our own people instead of spending money on foreigners at the expense of our citizens.

  25. Does the USA give British, Chinese, Canadians or anyone else illegally in the USA amnesty? The answer is no. Does Mexico give Americans in Mexico illegally amnesty? The answer is no. Then why should the USA give illegal aliens from Mexico amnesty? The answer is the, we shouldn’t.

  26. marty: Huntington talks of Hispanic immigration and does not really differentiate between legal and illegal immigration. My post covers that debate. Illegal immigration is a whole other topic that I don’t have time to go into right now.

  27. Why dont you all stop griping and listen to yourselves… I came across this website looking for somewhere to donate money to starving children and began reading the garbage you all are writing. I am truly disgusted with the prejudice, selfish and racial things on this website. I once thought similar (but not quite as bad) as you all until I got to know some mexicans. I am a landlord and they are my tenants. At first we had the same stereotypes in my office that I hear you all saying. But after getting to know them, I realize I knew nothing. As for them coming over to survive…if your family was starving and you could not find work to support them, would you not do ANYTHING you could to earn enough money for them to survive? Even if it meant leaving the only place you have ever known, your “home” which at any minute could fall down or knowing that there is a chance that you might be leaving for years and not knowing whether you will ever see your family again? How many of you have had to work in farms from the time you could walk without shoes and barely any clothes on your back? As for the language problem… as an American it is so easy to judge others. We have been trained since we were little children to believe we are the best and that if someone does not have what we have, it is because they did not want it bad enough to work for it. Well, I will tell you all that if you believe that crap, you are a fool. I too was once a fool. Until I took Spanish class and learned to communicate with them enough to understand that it is not because they dont want to learn but it is because they do not have the resources or opportunities. The immigrants that come from Mexico to the US illegaly are desperate and never had the public schooling like we do. The lucky ones were able to go to school until sixth grade even though sometimes that meant walking two hours to a school. The first thing they asked me was to teach them English. They understand they are in America and that is the primary language, but if noone wants to teach them but only gripe about them, how are they expected to learn? Since they have asked, we have begun a class through our local learning center and my class alone has between 24-27 students per class. So next time you all want to put someone down and degrade them, why dont you volunteer and see if there is not something you can do to help and make a difference rather than sit on your computer writing racial remarks…In the end, they are just as human as we are and the same creator which made us, made them and loved them just the same!!!

  28. ALO: Thank you, I agree wholeheartedly.

I am truly disgusted with the prejudice, selfish and racial things on this website.

I hope you don’t take the comments by other people on this post as representative of my thoughts. I own this website and disagree vehemently with the racism and nativism displayed in some of the comments.

  29. The truth is not racist, the truth is just the truth and the facts are that Mexican immigration isn’t good for the USA or Mexico. I live in Texas and Mexican immigration is a huge drain on our taxpayers ex. schools, medical, social welfare etc. because most of these immigrants are poor. That’s a fact and I’m not racist for saying so. Yes, it’s bad that many Mexicans are poor or lack education but it is up to the Mexican government to do something about it. It’s not the USA’s responsiblity to take Mexico’s poor or provide bilingual education to Mexicans at American taxpayer expense. I mean why should we pay taxes to teach Mexicans to speak English when my sister, who is American, can’t afford medical insurance and the government doesn’t help her?? Furthermore, wouldn’t Mexicans be much better off if they got a decent education and had decent paying jobs in their own country?? Isn’t is harmful to Mexico to lose so many able bodied citizens? Nobody is saying that Mexicans are bad people or that they should be degraded. I’m just telling the truth— that this current immigration isn’t good for the USA or Mexico for that matter, and as I said the truth isn’t racism or prejudice, just the truth.

  30. OK bmi, I was going to go up to mollys post and copy part of it to ask you if you truly think that is not racist… but she put too much up there for me to bother copying. Why dont you scroll up there, read it and tell me that her post does not reek of racism and prejudism. Everyone gripes that the mexicans come here and take our jobs and cost us money but if you think about it, the jobs they take are the jobs that we think we are too good for and would not want to do. I personally do not believe that “The truth is not racist, the truth is just the truth and the facts are that Mexican immigration isn’t good for the USA or Mexico” is the truth, just as you have your opinion, I do mine. And that is ALL this board is, is people posting their opinions. None of these are facts. Ok, about them getting an education, yes, in a perfect world, they would be able to get an education and decent jobs but their government is nothing like ours and they do not have the available resources or opportunities. Youre statement, “Yes, it’s bad that many Mexicans are poor or lack education but it is up to the Mexican government to do something about it”. This is what is wrong with the world today is that people have become too money hungry and selfish that noone is willing to not only help but give any sympathy to a life one was born into, without choice. If this was not true, 27000 children would not die per day from starvation… oh is that their governments fault? Lord forbid we help them!!! As for them being a burden on our dollars, I bet you the bilingual people who are given jobs to translate to them would beg to differ. The tax they pay is because of these people not being able to speak our language. Like I said, everyone has their own opinion and whatever interaction one has with these people is most likely to form theirs. As for your statement “I mean why should we pay taxes to teach Mexicans to speak English” well, obviously you did not read exactly what I said… I can see that this idea is completely unrealistic for most of the people here but I said…VOLUNTEER. That does not cost you a bit of your taxes, just an hour a week, at most!!! I went to my church and asked to use a classroom (which has no effct on the taxpayers of my community) and my parents and my brother and I teach two levels of English as a Second Language classes, (which also has NO effect on the taxpayers of my community!) That is the point I was trying to make. The time that people are sitting in front of their computer, insulting these people, they could use to help others. I am sure that many of you will come back to argue with me and that is fine because to the contrary of what you said BMI… “as I said the truth isn’t racism or prejudice, just the truth” what I say is not truth, as well as what you say is not truth, it is simply our opinions. And in my opinion, very few people have posted anything other than racism and prejudism. I just dont understand why as Gods children, we all have so much hatred towards anyone who is different from ourselves and which we feel causes a burden or takes a penny from us…that too is my opinion!!!

  31. Where has anyone here said anything racist or said they hate Mexicans or are opposed to people who are different?? How is criticizing our out of control immigration prejudiced?? You obivously don’t live in a border state.

I live in Texas and what Molly and I said IS the truth. This out of control immigration is very costly. Mexicans do have high birth rates which is why they have more poverty along with their government’s failures. Our schools are overflowing, our social welfare programs are full of Mexicans, our emergency rooms are overflowing .One hospital alone here spent 200 million on free medical care for Mexicans while uninsured Americans get a big bill and we have elderly Americans on a fixed income who can’t afford medicine. You call that fair??

You say Mexicans do the jobs Americans won’t. That is wrong. Lower working class Americans did those jobs until they were pushed out because they couldn’t compete with slave wage labor and now unskilled Americans are worse off.

There are poor people all over the world. I am all for helping the poor but you can’t solve the problems of poverty by importing all these poor immigrants into your nation, if you do, it will eventually sink your country. You have to use common sense here. It’s ok to allow some immigration of Mexicans and others in moderation but not what we have now which is way too excessive and getting worse.

It’s time to shut down the borders and severely restrict immigration from everywhere allowing those self supporting immigrants with higher skills into our country and giving the lower level unskilled jobs back to Americans. Any labor shortages after that can be solved by issuing legal temporary or seasonal work permits, not by allowing permanant immigration. From here on our, we should help poor Mexicans and others but help them in their own country.

  32. People always talk about economics when it comes to immigration but it’s not just about economics. It’s also about culture. Each nation has its’ own culture, customs and social mores, if they didn’t, all nations would be the same. When a nation continues to allow widespread immigration of people of a different culture, it weakens the original culture and can eventually destroy it. For example, Japan has Japanese culture and ethnicity obiviosly. Suppose Japan were to let in massive amounts of French immigrants and continued to let them in. What would eventually happen to Japanese culture when it became mostly French. It would weaken it and eventually destroy most or all of it. Japan would become another France. That brings me back to the USA and Mexico. The USA is built on western culture and has its’ own unique culture and Mexico is built on Latin American culture with its’ own unique Mexican culture. If the USA continues to allow unrestrained immigration of Mexicans, eventually we will become almost another Mexico. I want to say I have nothing against Mexico and like aspects of Mexican culture ie. their food, art, music, family orientation etc., however that doesn’t mean that I want my country to be turned into another Mexico. I fully respect Mexico’s right to its’ own culture but we Americans have the right to our own culture also. Despite the propaganda that the mass multicultural advocates tell people, nations that are mainly ethnically and culturally homogeneous with shared customs, values and social mores are better off. It’s ok to have some minority cultures to add spice to the mix, just not enough to change the mix.

  33. Greetings,
I just bumped in here idle browsing, what are we actually discussing, Mexican immigrants specifically or the problems illegal immigration caused to USA?
I am from Karachi, Pakistan. I was born here, so i’m a pure Karachite. I have been trying to get to the USA to complete my education. The embassy held my passport for 2 years after my interview, which was held at 18th Jun 2002. Then one day a few weeks ago, after two years that is, returned my passport with a Cancelled Visa on it. heh, i asked them, how, what, what happened here, after holding me for two years, they just send me a cancelled visa. I dont find any justification for this.
I guess, people that went to USA before us, not from pakistan only and every other country, have set examples of criminal acts mostly, again and again. And now there’s a Stamp placed on our faces, a black spot, that these people cant be trusted. They treat us like we’re beggers at the US embassy out here. Treat us like terrorists, and special lines setup for us at airports. I dont understand this.
Arent there bad people in USA? hasnt USA been caused more damage by its own people, rather than an immigrant, legal or illegal. That poor immigrant is so afraid to lose a job, fear of getting caught etc. Arent US jails full of Pure americans as well. i mean, you people have TV channels only to show criminal acts, police chases, etc. Havent Americans caused all sorts of problems for African American People only? The movies, the media, it seems there’s already a never ending war between the white and black folks, it’s just now other parties got involved from across the globe.
Ah well, we have no voice out here. We are all racists. Some damn day this is going to fall in our faces. The culture, the ethnicity, color, what so ever, it’s all going to become a serious problem later on. For the people who dreamed a Multiculture USA, too late. We should learn how to connect people, regardless of race, language, ethnicity. People are losing the value of a human being. Well, any way, i hope these problems end soon. Race after Race, generation after generations vanished in the same situation, nothing changed, it’s all still the same.
Culture we say here. What is culture? the clothes, the language, the attitute? i dont think so. First of all, it’s mostly poor, illetrate people who try to get to USA. Already been fooled by consultants and agents. Paying huge amounts just to get to the US soil. Why do they do this, does any one ever considered having a look at it. Even while they know if hey get caught they are going to have worst times. Mexico is right next to USA, why did Americans never try to accomplish a better way to end this immigration problem by sharing economy, trade, education and jobs within Mexico to keep their people there. Instead they put barriers on the borders, oh yeah now that’s a great idea. How long will that prevent USA from illegal immigrants. Are they trying to make it a castle. And i guess once it’s done becoming a castle they are going to pick up illegals and throw them back into the countries where they came from. which i think already has begun.
The best way to get rid of this problem would probably be by creating more jobs, proper education and research in mexico. Instead of more border patrol, which is not 100% tight. And let the educated people a chance to educate them selves well.

  34. I guess, people that went to USA before us, not from pakistan only and every other country, have set examples of criminal acts mostly, again and again.

    I don’t think so.

  35. Just stumbled onto this site and read the comments. I’ll say to “Mohammed” that due to the threat of Islamic extremism, we have to severely restrict those from Islamic countries as we have no way of knowing if a terrorist will come here posing as a student, tourist etc. We have to protect ourselves, what do you expect????

Also, who are you to criticize us on immigration or African-Americans, who have far more rights in the USA than they would be in Pakistan or most nations. When Pakistan and other non-Western nations start letting large numbers of immigrants come into THEIR countries, come back and talk to us about immigration. Until then you are being hypocritical to criticize or lecture us on immigration since you don’t have the situation in your country and as such don’t understand.

  36. Clint: Your bigoted comment has been disenvoweled. Further comments spewing hatred will be deleted and you will be banned.

It should be posssible for everyone to discuss immigration without resorting to hateful comments.
