Burke Marshall, 1922-2003

Burke Marshall has died. Burke Marshall, the government’s legal strategist on civil rights in the era of freedom rides, the Birmingham church bombing and the March on Washington, died yesterday at his home in Newtown, Conn., near Danbury. He was 80. The cause was myelodysplasia, a bone marrow disorder, said his daughter Catie Marshall. As… Continue reading Burke Marshall, 1922-2003

The Poor Man at his best

The Poor Man is supposed to be on semi-vacation working on his thesis (like me), but he is at his funniest and snarkiest posting loads of material. I can excerpt it, so I am linking to all his recent posts. First, he makes fun of Republican whining over alleged prejudice and takes on the thin… Continue reading The Poor Man at his best

Eric Rudolph: Terrorist

Eric Rudolph, longtime fugitive and terrorist, was finally caught a couple of days ago. When Rudolph bombed the Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta, GA in 1996, I still was more than a year away from coming here. But Olympics are a big event and I heard all about the bombing and was probably in Atlanta… Continue reading Eric Rudolph: Terrorist

Impeach them all

If it were up to Unqualified Offerings, 7 out of our last 11 post-WWII Presidents would have been impeached. The only ones to finish their terms: Truman, Eisenhower, Ford and Carter. JFK is iffy. Jim, please don’t make impeachment a joke.

Protestors are Terrorists

Via Unqualified Offerings, here’s the strange case of the California Anti-Terrorism Information Center (CATIC). CATIC spokesman Mike Van Winkle said such evidence wasn’t needed to issue warnings on war protesters. “You can make an easy kind of a link that, if you have a protest group protesting a war where the cause that’s being fought… Continue reading Protestors are Terrorists

A debate has been raging in the blogworld recently about using torture on Al-Qaeda members. Here are some of the posts on the topic: No Conclusions: Volokh Conspiracy For: Oliver Willis, The Agitator Against: CalPundit, Unqualified Offerings, Light of Reason, Path of the Paddle, Head Heeb. I would especially like to quote from Head Heeb… Continue reading Torture

Confederate Flag

One of the good things to come as a result of the patriotism expressed by people after the terrorist attacks of September 11 has been the large number of US flags on display everywhere. I like it especially since now it seems to me that Union flags outnumber Confederate flags in rural Georgia (since probably… Continue reading Confederate Flag

Eenie, meenie, minie, moe

One learns new things every day. Via Eve Tushnet, I found out that two African-American women have sued Southwest Airlines. The reason is said to be the reciting of “Eenie, meenie, minie, moe; pick a seat, we gotta go.” This apparently has some racist history in the US. When we get around to having kids,… Continue reading Eenie, meenie, minie, moe

Budgets and Wars

CalPundit is worried that the Bush administration has not budgeted for the Iraq war. It seems that’s not the first time. They did not budget for aid to Afghanistan for the 2003 budget either. The United States Congress has stepped in to find nearly $300m in humanitarian and reconstruction funds for Afghanistan after the Bush… Continue reading Budgets and Wars
