Zionist Church of Swaziland

Browsing through the religious data in the CIA World Factbook, I found out that Swaziland, a small landlocked country in Southern Africa (area 17,363 sq km slightly smaller than New Jersey and population 1.1 million) has a Zionist religion. No, this has nothing to do with Zionism. According to the CIA entry, Swaziland has the following religions:

Zionist (a blend of Christianity and indigenous ancestral worship) 40%
Roman Catholic 20%
Muslim 10%
Anglican, Bahai, Methodist, Mormon, Jewish and other 30%

Does anyone know what this Zionist religion is about?

The list of other religions is also interesting.

  1. The particular “Zion” that’s relevant to Africa is Zion, Illinois; the African Zionist churches were founded by missionaries from the Christian Catholic Church of Zion around the turn of the 20th century.

  2. I had heard of Zion being part of church names but not Zionist.

It’s also interesting that Swaziland, a land-locked country between South Africa and Mozambique has Bahais, Mormons and Jews.

  3. The Mormons (and other quasi-Christian evangelical sects) are there because nearly everyone sent missionaries to southern Africa in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Jews are Israelis, South Africans and the descendants of German refugees who South Africa didn’t want. I’m stumped by the Baha’i, though.

  4. Well, it’s good to see others talking sbout Swaziland. THis is an extremely poor country, where about 70% of people are living in poverty, and money is scarce. Now, I don’t believe in organizations that take money for ‘good’, but I did find one I believe in please visit http://www.youngheroes.org.sz. THis is a non-profiet organization that helps children. Call them at the nublmer listed to find out more.

Means Zionist, Zion and christianity are alike, the extremest relegions. You should add facts.

  6. Hello,

I visited the Zionist churches in Swaziland last March. I actually participated in their all night services. It was amazing. I have pictures and sound files. I understand I was only the second white man to attend this particular churches service.

  7. I have been doing a documentary with this religon. It is an extremist group dealing with Muti(a form of voodoo) beatings, sacrificial offerings, extreme baptimismsand other african rituals. Overall its not amazing, what you saw was dumbed down version of what is going on and probably didnt see the root of crazieness these people possess.
